NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Hundreds of Kenyan troops have crossed the border into Somalia hours after unidentified gunmen abducted two Cuban doctors from Mandera town.
The two doctors were working at Mandera Referral Hospital for the last one year.
Several gunmen traveling in two Toyota Probox cars have stormed the a vehicle ferrying the doctors, killing of one their escort before they were driven off across the border.
The other officer managed to escape in the attack.
The incident that occurred at 9am, according to witnesses.
Speaking to the media, Kenya National Police Spokesman Charles Owino said joint forces including police, military and Administration. Police were deployed to pursue.
“We will be able to give more information in the course of the day,” he assured.
The kidnapped doctors Landy Rodriguez (a surgeon) and Herera Correa (general practitioner) are among 100 Cuban specialists that Kenyan imported from Havana in June 2018 in a bid to improve service delivery in rural areas.
No group.has claimed responsibility for the attack which shuttered a year long stability in Mandera town
Al-Shabaab had beenn carrying out deadly raid and bomb explosions in Kenya since 2011 when the East African nation deployed its military in Somalia to the group.
Mandera which is on Kenya’s border with Somalia had previously witnesses attacks conducted al-Shabaab fighters.
The group majorly targeted non locals who in Mandera country, leading the county to loss labour from other counties including doctors, teachers and quarry workers.
