NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) –
Kenya national carrier is mulling to start direct flights to Hargeisa town, northern Somalia.
In a statement, the authorities of Kenya Airways said they are considering Hargeisa as its next destination in the Horn of Africa.
According to the statement, The officials said it will be a massive boost for trade between Kenya and Somaliland.
“Kenya Airways sees this as an opportunity to introduce flights to Somaliland. It will enhance the trade between Kenya and Somaliland,” reads the statement in part.
Before the diplomatic relationship between Somalia and Kenya deteriorated over a maritime border dispute, Kenya Airway announced that it will resume operations in Mogadishu.
It is not yet clear whether the company dropped the deal to establish the direct flights to Mogadishu.
Kenya and Somalia had a protracted dispute over a maritime boundary.
In February this year, Kenya summoned its ambassador to Somalia, saying it was protesting a decision by the Mogadishu government to auction oil and gas exploration blocks at the centre of a maritime territorial dispute in the Indian Ocean, a move denied by the Somali government.
In 2014 Somalia sued Kenya at the International Court of Justice.
Late 2017, Somalia won its first bid to resolve a case over a maritime dispute before the ICJ.
Judges at the ICJ dismissed claims fronted by Kenya’s lawyers that there exists an alternative method of resolving the matter.
Somalia wants the court to demarcate the maritime boundary, and to determine the exact geographical coordinates as an extension of its southern borders.
