KISMAYO (Halbeeg News) – Kenyan military forces under the framework of African Union Mission in Somalia on Wednesday claimed to have killed at least 11 al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia.
According to the military, Kenya military have reinforced Jubbaland state forces who came under al-Shabaab attack in Kuday locality, outside Kismayo town in Lower Jubba region.
Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) at Kuday FOB deployed a gunship helicopter and a ground fighting patrol unit.
During the clashes with al-Shabaab fighters, Kenya military said their soldiers destroyed two-vehicles belonging to Shabaab along Kuday-Tosha Road.
Earlier Wednesday morning, heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters had raided a base belonging to Jubbaland state forces, prompting fierce fighting which lasted untill mid-morning.
Al-Shabaab managed to kill seven Jubbaland soldiers troops while three sustained injuries, according the military officials in the area.
In a statement, al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack saying their fighters killed more than 20 Jubbaland soldiers.
Wednesday’s attack comes barely a day after Jubbaland warned locals against collaborating with al-Shabaab in the region.
Jubbaland forces backed by the national forces had been carrying out operations against al-Shabaab fighters in the region.
