MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s Jubbaland state will finally vote for senators on Thursday, a process which will kick-start electoral season in the country.
For the last two days, the electoral commission has been involving in the registration of candidates, and awarding certificates of candidacy to the Senate-hopefuls.
So far, commission has awarded certificates to six candidates: Ilyas Badal Gaboose, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartag, Iftin Hassan Basto, Abdirizak Mohamed Osman, Halimo Jama Mohamed, and Mohamed Ahmed Sayid. Gaboose was the first registered candidate to receive a certificate of candidacy.
Among the candidates contesting is only one woman, according to the commission.
Majority of Somalia’s regional state presidents had failed to meet the July 25 timeline for the start of elections in the regional parliaments.
Only Southwest and Jubbaland states have appointed election teams while all the other regional governments including the Somaliland caucus are yet to name their teams.
According to the elections schedule, FMS presidents were supposed to submit the names of candidates for the senate race latest on July 24.
