MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Jubbaland state security agencies have arrested two former soldiers for allegedly working with Al-Shabaab and committing treason.
According to a statement, Jubaland State Security, and Intelligence Agency (JISA) said Abdifatah Noor Abdullahi and Hassan Abdullahi Mohamed were detained in Kismayo town.
Both men were accused of stealing a Landcruiser Hardtop vehicle and an AK47 rifle that belonged to the Jubaland Ministry of Water and Energy.
The two were said to handed over the vehicle and the riffle to al-Shabaab group in Jilib town of Middle Jubba region.
“Jubaland State Security and Intelligence Agency has arrested Abdifatah Noor Abdullahi and Hassan Abdullahi Mohamed, who stole a Toyota Landcruiser hardtop vehicle and an AK47 gun this year. They then traveled to Jilib to hand over the government’s property to Al-Shabaab fighters,” the statement read.
The arrest of the two men comes as Jubbaland state is preparing to launch operations against al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia.
Somalia has been plagued by insecurity for years, with al-Shabaab being one of the main threats in the Horn of Africa country.
Since at least 2007, al-Shabaab has waged a deadly campaign against the Somali government and international forces that has claimed thousands of lives.
