KISMAYO (Halbeeg News) – Jubbaland Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (JIEBC) has pledged to hold free and fair elections in Jubbaland state of Southern Somalia.
In a response letter addressed to UN envoy in Somalia, the agency expressed its readiness to work and cooperate with federal and regional authorities.
The agency pledged that it will engage elders in the process select the region’s assembly members.
“We will closely work with the committee of elders throughout the vetting and selection process of the MPs,” the letter reads in part.
The letter distanced the poll agency from involving in corruption and is trying to favour one candidate over other.
The remarks of (JIEBC) comes barely a day after Jubbaland Council of Elders accused the agency of bias.
In a letter addressed to the United Nations (UN) envoy in Somalia, James Swan, Jubbaland Council of Elders expressed concern over potential election rigging in the state, accusing the poll agency of bias.
“Apparently, JIEBC set to corrupt the whole election procession in favour of one candidate over the rest,” reads the letter signed by 15 of the elders who are authorized to select Jubbaland assembly members.
