KISMAYO (Halbeeg News) – Jubbaland regional leader Ahmed Mohamed Islam, and UK ambassador, Ben Foder OBE met in Kismayo on Saturday.
The two sides discussed a wide range of issues including the upcoming regional presidential polls, security operations against armed group al-Shabaab and challenges caused by delayed rains.
“We discussed some of the pressing challenges facing this part of Somalia, including the fight against al-Shabaab, challenges caused by lack of rains, create jobs and durable solutions for refugees and some political issues,” UK ambassador said during a joint press conference.
Ambassador OBE stressed the need for transparent elections in the upcoming regional president polls in Jubbaland on August this year while urging for a dialogue between the federal government and the regional member state to resolve their difference.
“I have expressed our desire to support where possible a dialogue between the federal government and the regional member state to resolve some of the key outstanding challenges of preparing for next elections, fiscal models, security models, completing the constitutional review and the upcoming elections in Jubbaland and what can be done to ensure fair, transparent and honest process.” UK ambassador said.
