KISMAYO ( Halbeeg News)- The Independent Electoral body in the Jubbaland state of Somalia has extended registration process for presidential candidates for four days.
The move comes at the request of a recent visit by the international community delegation led by UN special envoy for Somalia, James Swan.
The earlier scheduled for presidential polls was pushed from 19th to 22nd August to accommodate the registration period for interested candidates.
The electoral body has however rejected to eliminate some of the conditions as per the request of the UN delegation on Thursday.
The conditions set aside for candidates include giving up government positions, not married to a foreigner and lived in the country for the past two years.
Opposition candidates who swore parallel parliament last week blame the incumbent leader, Ahmed Mohamed Islam for using government resources for campaign and security as a pretext to lock them out.
Various groups in the country including the UN, IGAD, and AU have called for peaceful and transparent polls.
