KISMAYO ( Halbeeg News) – Authorities from Jubbaland regional state of Somalia and officials from African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) met in Kismayo on Monday.
Jubbaland leader, Ahmed Mohamed Islam and AMISOM force commander, Lt. Gen. Tigabu Yilma Wondimhunegn held talks.
The meeting focused on the role of the AU peacekeeping mission in terms of security during the upcoming regional elections later this month.
According to Jubbaland deputy leader, Mohamed Sayid Adan who spoke to the media, the two sides discussed to cooperate on strengthening security during the significant democratic process.
The two sides agreed that Jubbaland regional police and AMISOM contingents in the sector will closely coordinate on security matters during the polls.
Sayid who also ruled out purported election interference confirmed that President Islam and Lt . Yilma reiterated new offensive and operation to kick out armed group al-Shabaab out of the remaining areas under their control in Jubbaland.
Meanwhile, Jubbaland election commission has confirmed that they received the list of some members who will be part of the regional assembly in the upcoming polls.
The federal government and Jubbaland state have been at loggerheads on the selection process for the members of regional assembly who will decide the next regional leader in forthcoming weeks.
