Six Al-shabab fighters were on Tuesday killed in a well coordinated operation against the group in Lower Jubba region, officials confirmed Wednesday.
Somali National News Agency (SONNA) quoting military officials said the operations which were conducted by Somali forces destroyed bases and a number of vehicles belonging to Al-shabab fighters.
The operations took place in Bar-Sanguni, Wirkoy and Araare village of Jamaame district, the military officials confirmed.
The agency said Al-shabab vacated Its stronghold town, Jamaame during the operation before its fighters made a comeback.
SONNA reported that the soldiers seized cache of weapons and landmines.
US soldier killed near Kismayo
Al-shabab on Tuesday claimed to have killed US soldier during a clash between its fighters and allied forces, a move dismissed by US government.
In a statement posted on pro-group websites said the forces clashes in the outskirts of Kismayo town.
“AMISOM and US troops came on helicopters at an area between Yontoy and BuulaGaduud villages. Our fighters responded to the attack, as a result one US soldier was killed and several others wounded,” reads the group’s statement.
The U.S Africa Command ( AFRICOM) has refuted Al-shabab’s claims saying no American soldier was killed or injured in Southern Somalia by Al-shabab.
“We are aware of the reports but they are incorrect. No American military soldier was killed or even injured on the outskirts of Kismayo as alleged in the report,” said the spokesperson of AFROCOM, Samantha Reho.
Delivery of Radio Andulus
Somali National Army has handed over confiscated Al-shabab Radio to Somali government.
Acting Information minister, Abdirahman Idan Yonis has commended the army for its bravery operation to dismantle Radio Andulus which the group’s mouthpiece.
“The Somali National Army has destroyed Al-shabab bases during security operations against the group in Lower Shabelle region. The army also seized Al-shabab’s main media, radio Andulus. It was dismantled and brought here in Mogadishu,” said Yonis during press conference in Mogadishu.
Somali forces backed by AMISOM troops have stepped up operations to capture areas controlled by Al-shabab following executive order by President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo early this month.
