The former speaker of lower house, Mohamed Osman Jawari on Thursday said in a conciliatory tone that he opted to unconditionally step down following over three weeks of heated political crisis which saw the Lower House members to fall apart.
In his farewell speech, Jawari noted that no group has won so far on the engaged crisis saying that the victory lies with supremacy of the constitution and the betterment of the public.
Jawari denied reports claiming that he was given money in return for his resignation.
“In most recent days, there were groups of people who on social media claiming that the resignation was exchanged with millions of cash. I am an oath and I can confirm before you today that no money was used to buy my resignation, whether it is the government or any other foreign country,” said Jawari during the speech.
The immediate former Speaker said he left the office only to rescue the House of the People of the Federal Parliament and for common interest.
“If the stand-off could haul longer, I was assuming it have cost the destruction of the Lower House which could lead damage to the House of the People. I chose to stand for [the support] to secure the existence and the unity of the House,” he explained.
Speaking about the achievements gained during his tenure of speakership, he led the House to establish a process which brought peaceful power transfer for three presidents and several governments for the first time since the fall Somalia’s central government in 1990s.
“We made possible for the first time since the anarchy, the formation of the 10th which comprises two Houses during the era of the 9th Parliament,” he boasted.
“And now I am leaving a full functioning Parliament which cooperates with the regional states. A parliament which had MoU’s with the countries sharing us with brotherhood relations, a Parliament which has Institutional memory and archive,” he added.
