ADDIS ABABA (Halbeeg News) – Two Iranian sailers who were kidnapped by Somali pirates in 2015 have been released, offcial said on Thursday.
The men were among crew member on the Iranian fishing vessel FV Siraj, which was captured by pirates on March 22, 2015.
The fourth member of the crew was freed last year as he needed urgent medical care.
John Steed, the coordinator of the Hostage Support Programme, a volunteer organisation based in Nairobi who spoke to Reuters said that the three men were released on Saturday, but were awaiting coronavirus tests to travel to Ethiopia and then home.
“This marks the end of an era of Somali piracy and the pain and suffering of Somalia’s forgotten hostages,” said.
The development comes barely hours after Somali pirates hijacked a Panama-flagged cargo ship.
The ship which sailed from the United Arab Emirates was heading to Mogadishu port.
The incident took place off the coast of Somalia’s northeastern Bari region.
