MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s International Partners (SIP) has warned against any attempt to derail the consultative forum on Somalia’s electoral process which kicked off on Saturday in Mogadishu.
In a joint statement, United Nations (UN), African Union (AU) and European Union (EU) have welcomed the swift action taken by Prime Minister Roble to engage constructively with political and community leaders to stabilize the security situation in Mogadishu.
The organisations emphasized that the summit represents a critical opportunity to move the country forward towards the holding of elections based on the 17 September Agreement.
According to the statement, the sides encouraged the involvement of key stakeholders in discussions with the signatories of the Agreement, underscoring that there should be no attempts to derail the process or obstruct agreement.
The sides also urged all Somali leaders to prioritize and participate in dialogue, exercise maximum restraint, and refrain from any actions that will further escalate tensions or lead to confrontation.
A separate statement, foreign missions in Mogadishu on Wednesday also expressed optimism that the talks would result in consensus on the carrying out of elections, and would enhance peace and security in the country.
“We commend Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble for convening the summit and look forward to his continued leadership in the electoral process, including electoral security,” the statement said.
