Scholars, Imams, clerics have convened in Somali capital, Mogadishu to attend international Sufi Conference which kicked off on Thursday.
The two-day meeting organized by Moalim Nur Foundation will focus on wide range issues including Sufism, its role in the spread of Islam, promoting peace and means to abstain from extremism.
Abdikadir Moalim Nur, the head of the foundation who spoke to Halbeeg News said the meeting had got no involvement in politics.
Sufi adherents who are attending the conference came from Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria, Senegal, Iraq, Turkey, Algeria, Morocco and UK.
Sufism arrived in Somalia probably in 18th century and was embraced widely following efforts by Somali scholars and clerics who learnt religion in Middle East.
Following deadly clashes with Al-Shabaab fighters who allegedly destroyed Sufi-Shrines in South and central Somalia, the country’s Sufi sect known as Ahlu-Sunna Wal Jama’a took the control of large swath of territory in Somali central.
