DHUSAMAREEB (Halbeeg News) – The meeting of the federal member states will begin in Dhuusamareeb today to discuss on issues related to the upcoming elections.
The leaders of Somalia’s regional states including Puntland, Jubbaland, Galmudug, Hirshabelle and Southwest states will be attending the conference.
According to sources the key topics for discussions are the relationship between the federal government and the member states, Somalia’s upcoming elections and the contentious issues surrounding the election models presented by the electoral body on June 27 2020.
The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) last week ruled out any elections this year based on the current electoral law noting the earliest an election can take place is March 2021.
NIEC chairperson Halima Yarey said this was based on the account the country settles for manual voter registration which should start this month.
The second option, the electoral boss said was to opt for biometric voter registration in which case the country will be ready for elections in August 2021.
