Hargeisa (Halbeeg News) – Somaliland lawmakers have dismissed an impeachment case against MP Mohamed Abib, who was arrested on Monday at Hargeisa’s Egal International Airport.
In an extraordinary session convened Tuesday, 51 house of representatives voted against the motion to remove Abib from office, three supported his ouster, and two abstained.
A motion to impeach Abib had been tabled before the House of Representatives on allegations that he undermined Somaliland’s interests and incited public unrest.
Abib was detained upon his return from the United Arab Emirates, where he had recently criticized the Somaliland government and the Somali National Movement (SNM).
The lawmaker’s arrest was condemned by the Speaker of the House and opposition parties, who argue it violates the constitution.
Abib has been a vocal critic of President Muse Bihi’s administration, alleging that it targets those who oppose its policies.
