Members of Inter-governmental Authority On Development (IGAD) has agreed to mobilize resources so to realize a comprehensive regional approach to deliver lasting solutions for the Somali refugees.
Eight Ministers drown from Eastern Africa region gathered in the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi to discuss on the progress of Nairobi Declaration and its Plan of Action.
Speaking at the meeting Kenya’s Internal Security Ministry, Fred Mitiangi said the trade bloc need to increase its efforts to reduce the challenges of the refugees.
“I am confident that with concerted relentless efforts, we will eventually meet all our pledges and ultimately delivered our promise for durable solution to Somali refugees,” said the minister.
IGAD envoy to Somalia, Mohamed Affey also addressed the ministers and emphasized the need for the International Community to demonstrate burden and responsibility sharing.
“Indeed, the challenge ahead of us is to ensure that International cooperation for comprehensive refugee responses materializes,” he said.
Somalia has commended the countries in the region for their commitment to support Somali refugees.
Mukhtar Mahdi Daud, deputy Foreign Minister who was leading Somali delegates said the country is recovering and trying to make a plan to repatriate its people in the refugee camps of neighbouring countries.
“The government of Somalia had been trying to know better the situation of its people in refugee camps and chat out well plan for future repatriation,” said Daud.
The members welcomed the remarkable progress that has been registered since Nairobi Declaration was adopted.
IGAD ministers called support for over 900,000 Somali refugees in the neighbouring countries and 1.5 million Internally Displaced Persons in the country.
