The Inter-governmental Authority on Development has warned against imminent tropical cyclone heading to Somalia.
The forecast comes barely a week after Tropical Cyclone Sagar Storm hit northern Somalia.
Heavy rain and floods killed over 50 people and thousands of residents in areas along Somalia’s coastal strip.
In a statement by the bloc, IGAD said active tropical cyclone dubbed Mekuku heading the coast of Somalia’s Semi-autonomous of Puntland.
The East Africa bloc’s Centre for Climate Prediction and Application Centre (ICPAC) said it is ICPAC closely monitors cyclone Mekuku which moves towards Somalia.
“The regional model prediction of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) latest run at ICPAC indicates that the tropical cyclone will move progressively northward and landfall over Yemen late on May 26, 2018,” the bloc said.
IGAD warned as the cyclone progresses to north, parts of the cyclone circulation and associated clouds and rains will hit along the coast of Somalia.
“However, the total accumulated rainfall expected over the coast of Somalia’s Puntland between May 25th and 27th is less than 30mm between May 25-27,” the alert said.
