DJIBOUTI (Halbeeg News)-The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and Germany government has signed a 34 million Euros grant agreement on Wednesday.
The grant was signed during the 46th Ordinary Session of IGAD Council of Ministers which was held in Djibouti capital.
The project grant will be used for migration and capacity building.
Chairperson of the IGAD Council of Ministers H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu and Foreign Ministers of member countries including Somalia’s ambassador Ahmed Issa Awad and Djibouti’s, Mohamud Ali Yusuf witnessed the signing ceremony.
The horn of the African nations such as Somalia and Djibouti is a transit zone for economic migrants and those fleeing from conflict determined to reach Europe via the sea.
Last month, more than 50 migrants were drowned to death when their boat carrying over 150 people capsized off Djibouti coast.
The Djibouti coast guard recovered Sixteen survivors after search and rescue operation.
Witnesses said large waves caused the overloaded boats to tip over about a half-hour after departing.
