NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – At least six General Service Unit (GSU) officers have been killed and three others sustained injuries after a vehicle they were travelling in ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) in Garissa County.
Officials in Garissa said the vehicle hit the IED suspected to have been planted by Al-Shabaab near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
The officers who were seriously injured in the attack were airlifted by KDF chopper to an Amisom Hospital in Dhoobley town.
The security forces have an operation to hunt down the perpetrators in areas near the border.
No group has yet claimed the responsibility for the attack.
Al-Shabaab has been carrying out attacks in areas along Kenya’s border with Somalia since 2011 when Kenya dispatched it’s troops to Somalia to fight al-Shabaab.
Kenya has thousands of troops operating under the framework of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
The troops operate in parts of Lower Jubba and Gedo regions.
