MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The International Court of Justice will concluded oral hearing in Somalia-Kenya maritime dispute after Kenya insisted not to participate in oral arguments.
In a statement, the court said Somalia will make its final submissions.
“ICJ is holding a final hearing in the case of Maritime Delimitation in the Indian Ocean (Somalia v Kenya),” the statement reads in part. “The case, which began in 2014, concerns the delimitation of the international maritime boundary between Somalia and Kenya.”
The court was to conduct oral hearings of Kenya on Thursday between 3 PM and 6 PM and on Friday from 3 PM to 4:30 PM, but the East Africa nation had informed the court that it would participate in the process.
Somalia and Kenya are seeking a resolution on the ownership of a 150,000 square-kilometer (58,000 square-mile) area off their Indian Ocean coastline, which both countries want to explore for oil, gas and fish.
In 2014, Somalia went to court to challenge a 2009 agreement that set its maritime border along latitudinal lines extending 450 nautical miles into the sea.
