Hundreds of people in Bula Burde town of Hiran region have been marooned by floods after River Shabelle breached its banks.
Villages along the river are the worst affected as families are forced were to spend the nights in stranded areas.
Bula Burde district commissioner, Abdirahman Dahir Guure said hundreds of residents have been displaced from their homes by floods and found refuge on high ground areas.
He noted that his administration is making efforts to rescue the victims that have been inundated with heavy floods.
“We are carrying out efforts to facilitate the evacuation of the people from flooded areas. Heavy floods hit the town and the level of the water could rise any time,” he said
Guure noted that the residents of some suburbs in the town face food insecurity after floods washed away their property and impassable roads left them without any food supplies.
He called on the federal government and aid agencies to help the victims before the situation turns into tragic.
“I call upon the federal government, Hirshabelle state and aid agencies to deliver emergency support to the these people,” he appealed, adding, ““These people have no water or food”
Thousands of people in Hiran and Middle Shabelle regions have been displaced by the floods following heavy rains in these regions.
Beledweyne town, about 335 km north of Mogadishu, has been the scene of devastating flooding after the Shabelle River burst its banks due to heavy rains.
Other regions in southern Somalia have also been reporting heavy rains as the Gu’ season (the long rains) gathers momentum.
