Hundreds of parents and students on Thursday took to the streets of Wajir town to protest lack of teachers in Wajir County following the exit of over 200 non-local teachers.
Recently Kenya Teachers Service Commission ( TSC) had announced transfer of over 500 non-local teachers from Wajir county to other parts of the country following last month’s attack on Qarsa primary School in Wajir.
The protesters gathered at Orahey Grounds before proceeded to the county commissioner’s office where they presented their grievances.
Representatives from the protesting parents who sat with County commissioner Lloyd Kibaara had expressed their dissatisfaction with TSC’s move to relocate its teacher to other parts of Kenya.
Mohamed Abdi, a parent who spoke to the media after meeting, has called on Kenya’s President, Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene the situation.
“This county has 85 per cent illiteracy level, now you want to add on another 14,000 students to that group. We request the President to address this matter immediately,” Abdi urged.
Kibaara has condemned the TSC’s remarks over insecurity in Wajir County saying security in the county has been been beef up.
“Qarsa attack was an unfortunate incident and after a security deliberation we immediately agreed on the transfer of non-local teachers from border area to safer areas but it is unfortunate that TSC withdrew the teachers without consulting the security organs (so as) to understand the facts about the state of security in the county,” said Kibaara.
Kibaara and Parents jointly called on TSC to rescind its decision to transfers the non-local teachers from the County.
TSC had so far transferred over 329 non-local teachers from 42 Secondary Schools across Wajir County.
Wajir County TSC Director Mohamed Yusuf said the commission will soon transfer 224 others from Wajir County.
The move came after suspected Al-shabab gunmen attacked Qarsa primary School in Wajir in February where they killed two non-local teachers and another non-local woman.
The education in North-Eastern has gradually came down to its knees after hundreds of Non-local teachers deserted the region in fear of Al-shabab attacks.
