AFMADOW (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s leading telecommunication company Hormuud has said continued destruction of the company’s telecommunication masts in southern Somalia has slowed down its efforts to use a mobile platform to offer mobile money transfer and other services to the residents.
Kenyan military planes have allegedly carried out bombardment that destroyed several masts in southern Somalia.
In a statement, the company confirmed that Kenya Air forces attacked a communication mast in Jaldeyse village near Afmadow town on Tuesday night.
The attack took place at 2 am on Tuesday making the destruction of the company’s masts ten since July last year.
Hormuud noted it had incurred huge losses after the masts were destroyed in different parts of Gedo and Lower Jubba regions.
“We believe that these actions are unjustifiable in international law. To that end we are gathering forensic evidence to assist the efforts of any willing investigation body,” the statement reads in part.
Telecom company called on the Federal Government of Somalia to stand against the vandalism of the company’s masts caused by Kenyan forces.
“We call upon the federal government of Somalia as well as international community and human rights organisations to put all their efforts to prevent more of these attacks and hold the Kenyan government accountable for their barbaric attacks,” the company stated.
Neither the Somali government nor the local authorities in area commented on the attack by Kenyan forces.
Kenyan anti-terror unit activities in the region have persisted in the towns in the last few months, according to residents.
