MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Hirshabelle state has restored its cooperation with the Federal government after leaders of the Federal and the regional state resolved the differences in Mogadishu.
In a statement, Hirshabelle said it reached an agreement with the federal government over the concerns previously extended by the state.
“Following discussions between Hirshabelle leaders (the President, Deputy President and the speaker of the state’s assembly) and leaders of Federal Federal government, the concerns of Hirshabelle state has been resolved. Therefore, Hirshabelle state will have cooperation with the Federal government,” a statement from Waare’s office read in part.
The statement further called on the leaders of Federal Member states to hold talks with the federal government to iron out the differences amicably.
The move comes barely two days after the National Security Council meeting proposed by President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo last week failed to take place after it was boycotted by the regional leaders.
The five regional leaders, Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas (Puntland), Ahmed Duale Gelle (Galmudug), Mohamed Abdi Ware (Hirshabelle), Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden (South West State) and Sheikh Ahmed Madobe of Jubbaland – met under the auspices Council of Interstate Co-operation in Kismayu from September 4 to 8, and resolved to suspend their co-operation with the federal government.
“The Council expresses its concerns the deepening political crisis and growing differences among the major stakeholders of Somalia. The interference in the internal affairs of the federal member states clearly undermine the constitutionally mandated separations of powers,” they said in a statement.
Late last week, the regional leaders demanded a “third-party mediator and guarantor” to settle their dispute with the federal government.
The leaders also said they want a secure venue for possible talks with the federal government and suggested that the meeting take place outside of Mogadishu.
The move was shot down by the Somali Prime Hassan Ali Kheire saying a foreign mediator will not be tolerated by the federal government.
“I am very pleased to inform the regional state leaders that the Federal Government of Somalia now has the capacity and authority to independently resolve disagreements in this country and that we do not need to call in the international community to mediate in our problems,” said the Prime Minister.
