Hirshabelle president, Mohamed Abdi Ware has appealed for aid to help the people threatened with starvation.
Speaking to Media at Adan Adde Airport after he returned from Djibouti said the drought situation in Hirshabelle state was escalating as River Shabelle dried up weeks ago.
“I appeal to the federal government and International aid agencies to immediately come to the help of the people in the affected areas. The people have no food and water and I urge everyone to be at forefront and deliver emergency aid to these people before it turn to tragic” said Ware.
Unprecedented droughts
“We need to join hands to save these people, they have been relying on River Shabelle before it dried up. people have been struggling to get water by digging holes in dry river bed but now even holes have no water,” the president added.
Just before the year begun, UN Somalia Mission ( UNSOM) had forewarned about unprecedented drought. The UN body said overall, 6.2 million Somalis require humanitarian aid. “More than half of these require urgent life-saving assistance.” said UNSOM in its report.
The report pointed out projections of below-average rainfall for the coming year indicate that Somalia’s “unprecedented drought” is likely to persist, “The prospects for recovery in 2018 remain grim,”
