A member of Hirshabelle Assembly decried rising insecurity along Mogadishu-Jowhar road barely a day after Al-Shabaab killed two lawmakers in an ambush.
Mohamed Yussuf Olow has faulted Somali government’s plan to secure the roads amid Al-Shabaab amassed its fighters along the road linking Isabelle towns to the capital.
“It is very hard and dangerous to the road linking Jowhar town to Bal’ad town. The attacks increased, Al-Shabab accelerated their attacks against the convoys of the Federal government and Hirshabelle leaders, we can no longer travel by road,” he said.
Al-Shabaab has stepped its ambush attacks against military and civilian convoys plying across the state.
Olow who spoke to media on Wednesday called on the Federal and State governments to secure the region.
“We cannot travel Mogadishu which lies 90 km from here by air, therefore, I urge the government of Somalia to secure the road,” he said.
The remarks of the lawmaker come on the heel of yesterday’s attack on a Hirshabelle convoy.
More than five people were killed and several others injured after al-Shabab militants ambushed the convoy near Balad town, about 30 km north of the Somali capital Mogadishu.
