BELEDWEYNE (Halbeeg News) – Hirshabelle state officials led by the state’s leader Ali Hussein Guudlaawe have arriced in Beledweyne town of Hiiraan region to assess the damage caused by the floods that hit the town.
Hundreds of families have been displaced after Shabelle River burst its banks at midnight on Tuesday night in some neighborhoods of Baledweyne.
The levels of water have risen significantly, forcing residents to flee from their homes to higher ground, taking whatever belongings they can carry. The local community has tried to mitigate the crisis by using sandbags.
Guudlaawe, who was accompanied by regional parliament lawmakers, ministers, and the governor of the Hiiraan region has inspected the Nurhawad bridge and some parts of the town’s neighbourhoods which affected by the river flooding.
The leader and his delegation also visited the Eljale area on the outskirts of the town. The president met dozens of the displaced people in the village.
Guudlaawe pledged that his government will support the displaced persons in Eljale.
The Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance [OCHA] on Wednesday said close to 200,000 were forced to abandon their homes in flood-prone low-lying areas of the town.
“Water levels in Shabelle have risen significantly. Beledweyne and nearby villages are flooded. Partners estimate that close to 200,000 people including IDPs are leaving their homes,” the agency confirmed through its official Twitter account.
