Hirshabelle state has handed over recovered weapons to African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) barely two days after heavily armed Al-shabab fighters ambushed AMISOM convoy near Bal’ad town.
In a ceremony held on Sunday in Jowhar, Hirshabelle president, Mohamed Abdi Ware returned two heavy machine guns to the AMISOM officials in Middle Shabelle region.
Speaking at the event, President Ware commended Somali Army’s quick recovery unit who made gallant efforts to recover weapons seized from AMISOM.
“I congratulate Somali forces who went to the scene and successfully recovered these weapons from Al-shabab fighters. I also appreciate the way they showed Solidarity to the ambushed AMISOM Soldiers,” Ware said.
Hirshabelle police commissioner, Hassan Di’isow who also spoke at the ceremony said a joint forces of Somali police and military who were dispatched to reinforce AMISOM had engaged a brief gun battle with Al-shabab at the scene before the forces recover the weapons.
” When the reinforcement forces reached the area where AMISOM convoy was waylaid, they clashed with Al-shabab fighters before managing to seize the guns,” Di’isow explained.
AMISOM officials on their part thanked Somali forces saying that the move promotes to strengthen the relationship between the two forces.
The ceremony was also attended by deputy president of Hirshabelle, Ali Abdullahi Gurlaawe, ministers, MPs and several other government officials.
Al-shabab fighters on Friday ambushed Burundi soldiers escorting a convoy of trucks transporting humanitarian supplies near Bal’ad town which lies 30km north of Mogadishu.
