MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The Somali government has dispatched high-level delegation led by the interior Minister Abdi Mohamed Sabriye to intervene clan clashes in Galgaduud region.
At least 20 people have been killed and hundreds displaced in clan-related violence caused by a land dispute this week.
The clashes between armed militias from two groups broke out around Kahandale village, situated in central Somalia’s Galgaduud region.
Abdi and his delegation who are in Adado town will head to the village to meet the sides.
According to sources in Adado town, the minister will hold talks with elders from both clans to convince them to cease the war.
Speaking to the media in Adado town, Minister Abdi called on the sides to end the clashes.
“We hope the brotherly clans will end their hostility through mediation and not bloodshed as is happening now,” said the minister, “There are efforts to mediate between the sides, and the elders are about to go and solve it.”
The clashes between the nomadic clans came over access to water reservoirs – a long-standing source of conflict in a nation hit by regular cyclical drought.
Arguments over land use, boreholes and pasture have perennially contributed to fighting among Somali clans who are largely pastoralists.
