MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has urged locals in the central Somalia town, Dhusamareeb to help his government to overcome the challenges of al-Shabaab.
During a meeting with traditional elders, politicians, and the local community, the president emphasized the role of the elders and politicians in the fight against the group which still controls part of Mudug and Galgaduud regions of Galmudug state.
President Mohamud advised them to oppose the group’s ambitions and to keep the local populace together.
Mohamud who travelled to central Somalia last week has been trying to convince locals to take up arms against al-Shabaab and help the government accelerate the commencement of the phase of the operations against the group.
Early this year, Somalia, and its neighbours (Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Kenya) agreed to conduct a significant joint military offensive against Al-Shabaab dubbed “Operation Black Lion” to liberate remaining territories under the militants’ control to not only stabilise the Horn of Africa country but also secure the region.
The agreement was reached at a summit hosted by Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and attended by the Heads of State of Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia.
