Heavy downpour and floods witnessed in and around Mogadishu have led to death and disruption of transport as some roads have been rendered impassable
At least three people has been killed and many of people displaced following heavy rains in the Somali capital Mogadishu
The rains which started Saturday night have been pounding till Sunday morning.
Families, majority of them being IDPs in different parts of the town were displaced after their homes have been inundated with flash floods following the heavy rains.
Local residents in Hamarweyne district have confirmed the death of one person after a perimeter wall collapsed on him.
The motorists and commuters have been left stranded after several major roads in the city were flooded, leaving havoc for the commuter headed to work.
Among flooded roads are Sodonka, Bulahubay section of Maka Almukaramma, 21st-October, Hamarweyne, roads near Ansaloti Underpass among others.
The floods cast a spotlight on the sorry state of drainage in Mogadishu, a perennial problem that government has failed to fix for decades despite tarmacking the roads under the aegis of the Turkish government.
Elsewhere, residents in Bulahubay neighbourhood were forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge in other parts of the town as their homes were rendered uninhabitable after floods swap their homes and belongings away.
Speaking to the media, Maryam Hussein Ali, a flood victim said over many families in Bulahubay suburb were rendered homeless after their houses were swept away by raging waters.
“Our belongings and foodstuff were washed away by floods. Our houses have been inundated and we are going spend the night in cold because we have nowhere to go,” said Ali.
She urged the government and donor agencies to move with speed in providing food and non-food items saying the worst affected by the floods are children, elderly and women.
“I urge the county government and aid agencies to come to our aid and help us with food and other assistance,” she appealed.
