Headteachers of Somaliland Private Schools have criticised the Education ministry’s decision to change the school calendar for School learning terms.
Somaliland Ministry for Education has recently released 2018-2019 term dates for schools as the period of the first term has been shortened
A circular released by the ministry indicates that learning at primary and secondary institutions for the first term will begin on 1st September instead of August.
Education directors, secondary school principals, and primary school headteachers have received the communiqué.
Addressing the media in Hargeisa town, Egal Raabi who is the headteacher of a private in Hargeisa faulted the move, saying the month deducted from the school term will have an effect on the learning process.
“But we must admit that the genuine issues are yet to be addressed. There are no quick fixes to the problems, the deducted month is going to interrupt the learning process,”
He stated that the education system was ailing and required an overhaul if the problems are to be addressed effectively.
“The real problem is with the education system. The period is very short, we were initially struggling to cover the syllabus by beating the set deadlines but now the problem has increased to an extent beyond our capabilities,” he lamented.
Somaliland’s ministry for Education has not yet commented on the concerns of the headteachers.
Somaliland declared itself independent from Somalia in 1991 but is not internationally recognised as a country.
