MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The outgoing Upper House Speaker Abdi Hashi will battle with a new candidate over the senate seat, Somali Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Guled has confirmed Monday ahead of the senate elections later this month.
According to the list of the candidates released last week by Somaliland’s State Indirect Elections Team (SIET), Hashi would run unopposed as he is the only candidate in his category. But the move faced sharp criticism.
Several politicians among them presidential candidate Fawzia Yusuf Aden and Ridwan Hirsi Mohamed have crticised both Hashi and Guled for ‘undemocratic’ practices.
In a statement, Guled said Sai’d Omar Hussein had been picked for the race following consultations with clan elders.
The announcement of Guled comes as Senate candidates vying for the 11 Somaliland seats in the Federal Parliament of Somalia are set to deliver campaign speeches to electoral delegates at Afisyoni tent near Mogadishu airport on Tuesday.
The delegates will elect senators tomorrow at Afisyoni ten.
