NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Unidentified shooters have killed a watchman before making away with $7000 in Mandera town near Kenya’s border with Somalia, police confirmed.
The heist which took place at a petrol station on Friday night was executed by seven men clad in Kenyan police uniform, according to a watchman who survived the incident.
Mandera East divisional police commander, Eziekiel Singo’e, said the assailants tied up the two guards of Takbir petrol station before proceeding to break the safe and stealing the cash.
“We are informed that the robbers were in police uniforms,” he said, adding that the watchman was killed for raising the alarm.
The victim who was killed by robbers wielding crude weapons is said to have screamed during the 1 am robbery incident before one of the assailants hit him with a blunt object on the head.
The guard who survived is being held at the Mandera police station.
Mandera polytechnic is about 100 meters from the petrol station where the robbery took place and is guarded by four national police reservists (NPR).
The chief’s office is also less than 100 meters away and is guarded by uniformed police at night.
