LAS-ANOD (Halbeeg News) – Unidentified gunmen on Saturday night killed a newly elected local lawmaker in northern Somalia, making the case first murder of a legislator in Somalia since the beginning of this year.
According to witnesses, Abdirisak Ahmed Elmi was reportedly killed near his house in Las-Anod town of Sool region.
The motive behind the murder of the councilor is yet clear as group has not yet claimed the responsibility for the attack.
Authorities did not comment on the murder of the lawmaker.
Elmi was among 249 councilors in Somaliland elections which took place mid this year.
Somaliland declared to seceded from rest of Somalia in 1991 after the fall of the central government by the then late Mohamed Siyad Barre.
The region which is relatively peace has not yet successfully secured international recognition.
Following international pressure to differences between the stakeholders of southern and northern somalia, authorities of Somaliland and Somalia had held several talks outside the coutry but ended with no fruitful.
