MOGADISHU (Halbeeg) – Unknown gunmen on Saturday morning kidnapped a journalist in the outskirt of Mogadishu, his colleague confirmed.
The journalist who was identified as Ismail Yussuf is working for Radio Wanlaweyn, a local radio station based in Wanlaweyn town.
The director of the station, Ismail Mire confirmed the abduction of the journalist said the gunmen raided the residential house of Mr. Yussuf just shortly after dawn prayer.
“Ismail Yussuf was abducted on Saturday morning from his residence in Wanlaweyn town. The men raided the house after Fajr prayer (Dawn prayer). We are making serious efforts to rescue him alive,” he said.
Unconfirmed reports say that the gunmen were Somali government soldiers but neither Wanlaweyn local authorities nor the police have commented on the abduction.
The move comes two days after a Somali allegedly killed a Journalist in Mogadishu, one of the latest in a series of attacks against the press in Somalia.
Abdirizak Kasim Iimaan who was working for London based SBS TV was shot dead by a policeman on service a checkpoint near Peace Garden.
The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) called on the Somali government to probe the incident urgently and bring the justice the policeman who behind the killing of the journalist.
“On behalf of NUSOJ, I am strongly condemning the assassination of cameraman Abdirizak Kasim Iimaan and I urge the Somali security agencies to launch urgent investigations relating to the shocking killing.” Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu the General Secretary of NUSOJ said.
The killing of Abdirizak becomes the first incident in which a media worker was killed in Somalia in 2018.
