MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali government has accused opposition leaders of last night’s clashes between Somali forces and bodyguards of the opposition.
Heavy clashes broke out near Daljirka Dahson Square, where Somalia’s opposition presidential candidates planned to hold an anti-government rally later in the day.
In a statement, minister of security Hassan Hundubey Jimale said government troops defended themselves against the attack.
“Armed militias” have attacked positions of government troops in Mogadishu. The troops defended themselves,” the statement reads in part.
The clashes came hours after former State Minister of Defense Gen. Sheikh Yusuf Inda Adde declared the government of Somalia as illegitimate.
Yusuf, who lead soldiers has amassed troops in the monument of the Unknown Soldier in the Somalia capital Mogadishu.
Yusuf who was once a Islamic Courts Union had defected on n May 17, 2009, to Somali Government and was later appointed state minister of Defense.
