MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali army in cooperation with Galmudug forces has jointly launched operations to hunt down al-Shabaab fighters in central Somalia.
According to military officials who spoke to the media, the forces destroyed the Al-Shabaab base in Imad village under the Harardhere district of the Mudug region.
Over a dozen al-Shabaab fighters were reportedly killed in the operations against the group.
Al-Shabaab has been fighting the Somali government for more than a decade. The group currently controls dozens of villages and towns in south-central Somalia.
The group also attacks military bases manned by Somali and AU forces.
Somali government forces launched operations against al-Shabaab fighters in Hiiraan, Galgadud, Mudug and Middle Shabelle regions.
According to Somali Prime Minister Hamze Abdi Barre, the government forces backed by local clan militias killed more than 2,000 al-Shabaab fighters.
