NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Garissa Governor Ali Korane will appear in a Nairobi court on Tuesday where he will face graft charges against him.
The governor who spent last in police custody pending his arraignment over allegations of graft was arrested yesterday evening.
He was accused of embezzlement of Ksh.233 million World Bank grant.
Last Thursday, Kenya’s director of Public prosecution, Nuradin Haji said Governor Korane and four others allegedly embezzled Ksh. 233,506,000 released by the World Bank under the Kenya Urban Support program.
The statement indicated that investigations uncovered that the money was diverted on different occasions between February 2019 and September 2019.
“The said funds were to be used for three specific municipal projects namely; construction of Qorahey market, recarpeting of Garissa Township Central Business District roads and construction of storm water drainage and pedestrian walk ways,” reads the statement.
The officials to be charged alongside Governor Korane are Finance Chief Officer Ibrahim Nur Malow, Head of Treasury Mohammed Ahmed Abdullahi, Municipality County Executive Officer Abdi Shale and Municipal Head of accounting Ahmed Abdullahi Aden.
The money at the centre of the storm was meant for building Qorahay market, re-carpeting Garissa Township roads and constructing a storm water drainage and pedestrian walkways.
