MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – – At least al-Shabaab fighters were killed in an airstrike conducted by the U.S. military, Washington Military in Africa confirmed in a statement Sunday.
According to the statement by US Africa Command, the airstrike took place in a remote area which lies approximately 45 km southwest of Hobyo, and about 472 km northeast of Mogadishu.
US Africa Command said in a news release that no civilians were hurt or killed in the strike.
“U.S. Africa Command provides support to the Somali government to address terrorist threats, but we are only part of the U.S. efforts there,” said Gen. Michael Langley, AFRICOM commander.
The new airstrike against al-Shabaab comes barely two days after the Somali government claimed to have killed more than 117 al-Shabaab in a joint operation in central Somalia.
The government also said it destroyed an al-Shabaab training base.
Somali government in collaboration with armed locals launched operations against al-Shabaab fighters in southcentral Somalia.
The allied forces recaptured dozens of villages and towns in the Middle Shabelle, Hiiraan, Mudug and Galgadud regions.
Somali prime minister, Hamze Abdi Barre recently claimed that Somali forces killed more than 2,000 al-Shabaab fighters since the operations commenced last year.
