MANDERA (Halbeeg News) – At least four people have been arrested in Mandera in connection with the death of two non-locals in Mandera County.
Last week hundreds of locals went to the streets to protest over alleged extrajudicial killings executed by Kenya forces in Elram village.
Irate demonstrators stoned to death to death two people from other parts of the country.
One of the two victims was said to be a medical worker at the hospital while the other was a casual labourer.
Following two days of thorough operations in Elwak and its environs, the police nabbed four young men accused of taking part lynching of the victims.
Confirming the arrest, Northeastern regional commissioner Mohamed Birik said police are still hunting down more suspects linked to the death of the two people
“I’m warning anyone against inciting the public. Residents should stop taking the law into their own hands. We will firmly deal with those found culpable,” Birik said in his office.
He condemned the lynchings and urged residents to give the government time to investigate the matter.
“If they have concerns, there are channels to address them, there is no way people come the way from their homes to cut short lives of their fellow citizens,” he said.
Birik said investigators had widen their net and were closing down those behind the attack
“sympathizers and those working with terrorists should be arrested to face the law,” he directed.
He called on the resident cooperate with the law enforcement agencies to curb the threats of Al-Shabaab fighters.
“I want to urge the residents of Elwak not to fall into the whims Al-Shabaab because what happened nearly border on the narrative of the terrorists,” Birik said.
