NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – At least four al-Shabaab suspects have reportedly died in a blast suspected to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Kenya’s coastal region.
According to Statement by Kenya authorities, the four suspected to have been trying set up the IED when it went off prematurely.
The incident happened on Thursday in Lamu county.
Lamu security operation director Joseph Kanyiri said the security forces visited the scene and launched an investigation.
The improvised explosive device (IED) also an unknown number of suspects as per the police
“I can confirm that four of the militants died from an IED explosion,” he said. “It seems the device went off before they were done setting it up, killing three militants on the spot while another died a few minutes later.
“Three badly charred bodies were recovered on the scene while another was picked up a few meters away. It seems he was trying to get away but succumbed to injuries,” Kanyiri added.
Al-Shabaab which has been attacking Kenya since 2011 uses IEDs to attack the security of the East Africa nation.
The group tries to pressure Kenya to withdraw its forces from Somalia.
Kenya deployed its military in Somalia in 2011 to fight al-Shabaab.
The country now has thousands of troops operating under the framework of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
