ADDIS ABABA (Halbeeg News) – At least 26 former officials and employees of Ethiopia’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS), including the former boss, Getachew Assefa, have been charged with gross human rights violations, Official news agency, FANA reported on Tuesday.
Getachew Assefa, former Director General of NISS, and the other three officials-Atsebha Gidey, Assefa Belay, and Shishay Leul were charged in absentia at the Lideta Federal High Court, according to a press release issued by the office of the Federal Attorney General.
The defendants are suspected of gross human rights violations such as torture, forced confessions, sodomy, rape, electrocution, and arbitrary detention of people including in secret facilities.
Senior Ethiopian government officials were arrested including the former president of Ethio-Somali regional state, Abdi Mohamed Omar for abuse of office and human rights violations.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration has embarked on rigorous reforms in various government institutions since coming to power in April last year.
