BOSASO (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s northeast regional state, Puntland authorities have confirmed the death a senior commander of the ISIS group in Bari region amid the operation oust al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda linked group is ongoing southcentral Somalia.
The operative identified as Abu-Albara al-Amani was killed in a clash with Puntland security forces, according to a statement by Puntland government.
Al-Amani, an Ethiopian national from Amhara region in the neighbouring country was serving as head of IS operations in Somalia since July 11, 2021.
Puntland officials said Abu Albara as the leader after Puntland forces killed his predecessor Abu Walid Al-Muhajir in clashes.
The pro-Islamic State faction in northeastern Somalia is led by Sheikh Abdulkadir Mumin, a former Al-Shabaab cleric who pledged his allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2015.
In 2016, the U.S. State Department designated Mumin as a global terrorist.
Since the emergence of the IS faction in October 2015, the group has claimed responsibility for deadly attacks in Puntland and southern Somalia.
