The number of flood victims in Somalia’s riverine regions might shoot to about 300,000 people following new flash floods in Middle Shabelle region.
This follows after River Shabelle, which stretches from Ethiopian highland, broke its banks following the ongoing rains in Ethiopia.
At least 200,000 people in Beledweyne town displaced by floods are already homeless and are in dire need of help.
New reports indicate that over 15 villages along River Shabelle have been submerged after the river breached its banks.
Among the villages affected are Foley Haji Ali, Damaley, Faay Duhul, Bula-Saytir, Farbaraki and Jame’o villages.
Nur Ali, who was displaced by the floods said most of the villages had been inundated with heavy floods.
” The river has broken its banks and led to heavy floods that submerged homes in villages along the river,” Ali said.
Crops
The farmers have lost variety of crops after floodwater washed through their farms when the river burst its banks.
Ali said the floods destroyed crops on several farms alongside the river.
“We have lost everything. The floods washed away seedlings and soon-would-be harvested crops. The floods also swept away homes,” he lamented.
He appealed the Federal government and international aid agencies to help the victims before the situation turns into tragic.
“The situation is worrying, at the moment we have nothing to eat and nowhere to sleep, we urge the government to help us,” he said.
