The families from different suburbs of Beledweyne town were displaced when the heavy rains and floods from River Shabelle submerged their houses.
Food, clothes and properties of unknown value were also carried away by the flashed floods.
The flood victims who moved to El-Jale locality appealed to the government and NGOs to assist them with food and other humanitarian assistance.
Hiran deputy governor for Social affairs, Sheikh Hussein Osman called on well-wishers to donate blankets and clothes to ease the suffering the displaced persons as they are now spending their nights out in the cold.
“These people came here for safety and now need food, water, medicine and tents therefore I call upon the humanitarian aid agencies to play their roles,” said Osman.
UN Office for the coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Monday that thousands of people in Hiran region have been affected after River Shabelle burst its banks and inlets overflowed into parts of Beledweyne town and several riverine villages inundating houses and crops.
The agency pointed out that Beledweyne Airport has not been functioning for extended period over the course of last week due to barrage by rain waters, hampering the delivery of supplies.
Among the areas people fled from are, Hila’a, Kitimbo, Donsubagle, Kooshin and Hawo-tako neighbourhoods
