MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least 100,000 people have been displaced and property destroyed by flash floods in two weeks in southern Somalia.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the floods also killed 12 people in the Bardhere district, Gedo region which has experienced the heaviest rainfall in recent days.
OCHA said the education of about 3,000 children was disrupted after their learning institutions were affected by floods.
“The floods also destroyed six health facilities, 200 latrines, and four schools,” OCHA said in its latest update on flash floods in Somalia.
The agency said more than 1,000 hectares of farmland have been swamped.
According to OCHA, an inter-agency assessment by partners and authorities in Bardhere found that more than 13,000 families (about 78,000 people) have been affected, with shelters of 8,945 families (about 53,600 people) damaged or destroyed.
It said moderate to heavy rains in the Ethiopian highlands are the main cause for the increasing levels of the Shabelle and Juba rivers.
