At least Kenyan Security officials have been killed and three others injured after their vehicles hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
The officials were on patrol when the incident happened near Liboi town.
Dadaab Deputy County Commissioner Harun Kamau who spoke to the media said a vehicle belonging to General Service Unit (GSU) ran over landmine buried near the road.
“There was an attack this morning targeting officers on normal patrol. Unfortunately, we lost five officers while three others have been injured,” Mr. Kamau.
The deputy county commissioner said reinforcements have also been sent to the area to pursue the perpetrators of the attack.
The attack coincides with the demonstrations staged by local residents of Liboi town following the disappearance of residents of the town after their houses were attacked by security agencies.
The mysterious disappearances have been taking place in the recent weeks.
Local leaders said the cases of mysterious disappearances hinder the fight against Al-Shabab due to mistrust between security agencies and locals.
Some of the relatives said the government should release their loved ones or charge them in court if they are suspected to have committed any criminal offence.
