At least five Kenya police have been killed and three others injured in Al-shabab attack in early Friday morning in Mandera town near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Heavily armed Al-shabab members have destroyed Safaricom mast before they have attacked two camps in Fino Ward of of Lafey sub-county.
Lafey Deputy County Commissioner Eric Oronyi who confirmed the incident said the two camps were belonging to Administration Police and Kenya Reservists in the area.
“Al-shabab destroyed the telecommunication system of Fino town before they engaged gun battle with soldiers at two camps in the town,” said Oranyi.
Fino member of County Assembly, Sa’ad Sheikh Ahmed Aba-Janne said five soldiers from Kenya Reservists were killed.
“Five police reservists attached to the police camp were killed and three other sustained injuries in what we suspect to be Al-shabab attack,” Aba-Janne said.
The deputy speaker of Mandera county, Farah Adow Abdinoor who spoke to Halbeeg said the government dispatched troops to scene.
“Yes there are casualties, the number of death we heard so far is five but it can increase as we have not yet the full information, police officers had been sent to area,” Abdinoor told the media.
This is the fourth time Al-shabab attacked Fino town which located about 80km northwest of Mandera in less than a year.
Last year, Al-shabab killed four soldiers after they raided the same police administration camp.
The group also burnt two police vehicles and made away a landcruiser.
